Friluftsliv health benefits, without the hype
nature isn't medicine, but it resembles it more than we admit
In short. Friluftsliv, open-air life as a daily practice, is often sold as a wellness prescription. The research on time in nature is genuinely encouraging, and it has a number: in a study of 19,806 people, the odds of reporting good health rose significantly at 120 minutes a week or more, and stopped improving after about 300. But Norway’s own statistics agency, reporting on friluftsliv specifically, says plainly that it cannot tell whether friluftsliv makes people healthier or healthier people do more friluftsliv. Both halves are below.
What the research shows
The most robust evidence is not about friluftsliv by name. It is about time in nature, of which friluftsliv is one form, and the clearest single result comes from a 2019 study in Scientific Reports by Mathew White and colleagues, drawing on a nationally representative English survey of 19,806 people:
Compared to no nature contact last week, the likelihood of reporting good health or high well-being became significantly greater with contact ≥120 mins (e.g. 120-179 mins: ORs [95%CIs]: Health = 1.59 [1.31-1.92]; Well-being = 1.23 [1.08-1.40]). Positive associations peaked between 200-300 mins per week with no further gain.
Two hours a week is the threshold. Five hours is roughly where the benefit stops growing. Those are unusually concrete numbers for this field, and they are the ones worth carrying around.
The study also settles a question I used to answer wrongly. I assumed that a little every day beat a lot occasionally, because that is the shape of friluftsliv as a practice. The data does not support it:
It did not matter how 120 mins of contact a week was achieved (e.g. one long vs. several shorter visits/week).
One long walk on Sunday and five short ones across the week did equally well. The case for daily regularity is a case about habit and about what makes a life, not a case the health evidence makes.
What the research doesn’t say yet
This is where most articles stop. It is worth going on.
Statistics Norway published a 154-page report on friluftsliv in September 2023, Friluftsliv i Norge: Status og historisk utvikling, drawing on five decades of national survey data. It finds the association, and then states plainly that it cannot identify causality. The question it leaves open is this one:

whether participation in friluftsliv has an effect on quality of life and health, or whether it is people with better quality of life and health who do more friluftsliv
That is a national statistics agency, with the best friluftsliv data anyone has, declining to say the thing every wellness article says. What it does report is that in every population group examined, the people who do no friluftsliv score lowest on quality of life and perceived health, and that the gap is widest among older people, people on low incomes and people with disabilities.
So: the correlation is real, consistent and largest exactly where you would hope. The arrow of causation is not established. Both of those are true at once, and an article that gives you only the first is selling something.
Two effects in one: moving and being in nature
Part of the difficulty in measuring friluftsliv is that it overlaps two things research usually studies separately: physical activity and nature exposure. Walking in a forest is not just walking, and not just being in a forest. It is both at once. Friluftsliv does not add a mysterious third ingredient; it combines these two and makes them a habit rather than an event.
That is also why it resists a clean trial. You cannot randomise people into a culture.
Questions people ask
Is friluftsliv actually good for your health?
The association is well established: people who do friluftsliv report better health and higher quality of life than people who do not, in every group Statistics Norway examined in 2023. The causal direction is not established, and Statistics Norway says so itself. Time in nature more broadly has stronger evidence, with a measured threshold of 120 minutes a week.
How much time outdoors do you need?
For the health association, 120 minutes a week is the figure with evidence behind it, rising to a peak between 200 and 300 minutes. Above that the measured benefit stops increasing. It made no difference whether those 120 minutes came as one long visit or several short ones.
Is friluftsliv a therapy?
No, and be wary of anyone selling it as one. The best available data on friluftsliv itself stops at correlation. It is a way of living that makes daily the things research links to health, not a treatment with a proven dose. And it does not stop for the cold; see winter friluftsliv.
Why is there so little research on friluftsliv specifically?
Because friluftsliv is a culture, not an intervention. The strongest designs, randomised and controlled, need something you can assign to people. What exists instead is national survey data, which is very good at showing who does what and how they feel, and structurally unable to prove which caused which.
